New hospital has been created on a four-acre land It will cater to the needs of nearly 70,000 people CHENNAI: An upgraded primary health centre equipped with 30 beds, an operation theatre and a mobile ambulance was inaugurated at Medavakkam on Saturday. Inaugurating the facility, Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T.R. Baalu said the Tamil Nadu government was making all efforts to improve the quality of life of people in the State by improving basic infrastructure. This, in turn, would help in improving the country’s GDP. Around 98 per cent of children in Tamil Nadu were born in government hospitals, he said. The infant mortality rate was also very low. He appealed to the State Health Minister to create a Trauma Care Centre at the Primary Health Centre in Medavakkam. Health Minister M.R.K. Paneerselvam said the new hospital, created on a four-acre land, had a good ambience, with play area for children. It would cater to the needs of nearly 70,000 people residing in and around Medavakkam, he said. Specialists from various hospitals in the city would visit the Medavakkam Primary Health Centre at least once a week, he added. Listing out of the healthcare schemes of the State government, he said in the last two years, more than 17,000 vacancies in the health and family welfare department had been filled up. The Chief Minister had announced that hospitals functioning in the District Headquarters would be provided with MRI Scans, he said. A total of Rs.100 crore was allocated for constructing buildings and hostel block at the Stanley Medical College. Labour Minister T.M. Anbarasan said the State government had appointed nearly 4,000 doctors in the last two years. State Health Secretary V.K. Subburaj said the Primary Health Centre in Medavakkam was the biggest not only in terms of the building but also with regard to facilities. The new building was constructed within seven months and the order for upgradation was issued within 10 days, he said. The maintenance of the hospital would be taken up with the help of private participation, he added. R. Desikan, president, Catalyst Trust, which took up the upgradation work, said the new facility was created at a cost of Rs.1.80 crore, including the ambulance.
