“Many construction workers are still unaware of welfare boards” TIRUCHI: Construction workers, affiliated to Tamil Nadu AITUC Construction Workers Association, have planned to stage demonstrations across the State on June 23 to urge the State Government to implement their 16-point charter of demands. Disclosing this to the media here on Saturday, the Association State president N. Periasamy said that the demonstrations would be organised in 250 centres. The Association would urge for implementation of social security benefits such as ESI, provident fund, pension and bonus for the construction workers as guaranteed under the Tamil Nadu Manual Workers Act, 1982. This apart, the Association would also press for the implementation of other demands including free house site pattas to the construction workers, fixation of Rs.1,500 per month as pension, implementation of family pension scheme, provision of adequate safety measures and kits to the workers at the work spot, establishment of crèches to take care of the children of the workers, creation of separate welfare boards for quarry workers and those working in brick-kilns etc. Creating awarenessMr. Periasamy said that there were an estimated 40 lakh construction labourers in the State of which 11 lakh had registered themselves with the welfare boards. Many construction workers were still unaware of the welfare boards, he said adding that the demonstrations was also aimed at creating awareness among such workers about the functioning of such boards and the need to register with them. Mr. Periasamy said that the State Government itself should take over the quarries across the State as it had done in the case of sand quarries in order to protect the mineral resources from being exploited. There were over 2.5 lakh quarry workers across the State working under unsafe conditions, he said. The construction workers were finding it difficult to get jobs even for four months in a year, Mr. Periasamy said and while urging for the implementation of their other demands.
