Fiat to schools

Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI: A high-level committee headed by the Chief Educational Officer, K. Swaminathan, has warned government and government-aided schools in the district that their recognition would be cancelled if the fee they collected from students exceeded the specified amount.

The schools that were found to have collected excess amount were directed to return the same to students promptly. The committee that comprises District Educational Officers and Inspector of Matriculation School as members paid surprise visits last week to two government schools, six government-aided schools and a self-financing school based on complaints from parents.

“If there is any complaint to this effect in future, the department will initiate stringent action against the headmaster and will not hesitate to withdraw the recognition of the school,” Mr. Swaminathan said, adding that at the outset, clear instructions were given to headmasters to desist from collecting donations.

The refrain of the schools was that they had to collect additional amounts to pay teachers who were appointed through the Parent- Teacher Association.

The Committee had directed the schools to admit students based only on the actual staff strength.
