Suganya, the first graduate in her family, says her interest in mathematics was encouraged by her school teachers 
ACHIEVEMENT: R. Suganya of Bharathiar University. — COIMBATORE: R. Suganya, who just passed out of L.R.G. Government Arts College, Tirupur, with a B.Sc. Mathematics degree, has created a history of sorts. She has scored centums in all the five subjects in her last semester. Not only this. Suganya has scored 100 marks in 12 papers in six semesters. According to Vice-Chancellor of Bharathiar University G. Thiruvasagam, this is a record of sorts. “Nobody in the history of the university has scored centums in all the papers in a semester. I am very proud of her. The credit goes to her and her college faculty,” he told The Hindu. Suganya is the first graduate in her family. Her father is a utensils vendor, while her mother works in a garment factory. She says her interest in mathematics was encouraged by her school teachers who taught the subject in a very simple manner. She joined B. Sc. after completing her school education in Tamil medium. With sheer determination and hard work, she excelled in her studies without having to take tuitions. “I knew I will get good marks. But, I did not expect centum in all the papers,” she says. Having landed a job, Suganya has decided to continue her studies after sometime. The Vice-Chancellor has assured her of a seat in any course of her choice if she wished to pursue her studies, as she was not only a meritorious candidate, but also a deserving one. “She is an example of a person who has achieved in spite of many odds. There can be no excuse for not excelling in studies. Language and poverty cannot be excuses. Suganya has proved it.” Suganya too shares the same sentiments. “Once you know the fact that you have to study in a new language, you have to accept it and give it your best. Nothing can stop you from excelling,” she says.
