dated June 23, 1958: Arms race

Mr. Nikita Khrushchev, the Soviet Prime Minister, said in a letter to the Melbourne Herald published in Melbourne on June 21 that the logical end of the East-West arms race was war. Although Russia was being asked to renounce the military use of rockets she used to launch the Sputniks, every effort was being used in Britain and America to evolve inter-continental ballistic rockets with the single purpose of making them weapons of mass destruction, he said. “And they (Britain and America) proceed from the strange philosophy that possession of this terrible weapon by the two sides creates the necessary requisites for maintaining peace,” he said.
