Leaders of Left parties want Karunanidhi to find solution

“Steps being taken to keep UPA, Left unity”

CHENNAI: Reiterating the stand of the Left that the United Progressive Alliance government should not go to the International Atomic Energy Agency Board of Governors with the safeguards text, CPI (M) general secretary Prakash Karat on Sunday sought the intervention of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to find a solution to the problem.

“We assured him that we would discuss the issue again and be in touch with him,” said Mr. Karat, who was here with CPI’s national secretary D. Raja to explain the Left parties’ views on the Indo-U.S. nuclear deal to Mr. Karunanidhi. “We explained our views as he is the senior most leader of the UPA and requested him to intervene and intercede in the problem to see a solution is found,” Mr. Karat said.

Mr. Karunanidhi had told the two leaders that he did not want the UPA-Left unity disturbed, as it would help only the communal forces and not the country.

Sharing the Chief Minister’s concern that the BJP should not be allowed to gain any advantage because of the rift, Mr. Raja told The Hindu that the UPA should also keep in mind the warning of Mr. Karunanidhi. “We are here because we are also an ally of the DMK. We will continue to discuss the matter,” he said.

Asked whether any compromise formula had been worked out to end the stalemate and prevent early elections to the Lok Sabha, Mr. Karat said, “We are discussing the steps to keep the unity of the UPA and the Left.”

To a question whether the Left would ensure that the Government would complete its full term in the office, he said “that I can’t say.”
