Alternative road to be developed PWD road posing problems for SmartCity KOCHI: Works will be initiated soon to make the Edachira-Brahmapuram road motorable. A meeting chaired by District Collector M. Beena here on Saturday decided to tar the 2.5-km Edachira-Brahmapuram-Karimukal road, except the stretch that passes through the land assigned to the proposed SmartCity project, at a cost of Rs. 70 lakh. The work will be launched soon. SmartCity Kochi would repair at its expense about 750 metres of the road that passes through the 100 acres of land assigned to it. UnderstandingThe meeting also reached an understanding about an alternative road that has to be developed since the 750-metre stretch of the existing road would become the property of SmartCity Kochi. The idea is to develop the panchayat road that passes along the border of the SmartCity-owned area. This road would be reinforced by tarring it at three-metre height and expanding the width to five metres. SmartCity would bear the cost of developing this 1,200-metre-long road. This would be implemented subject to the approval of the State government and SmartCity. SEZ statusThe existence of a PWD road right at the heart of the 100 acres assigned to it was posing problems for the promoters of SmartCity Kochi to receive Special Economic Zone (SEZ) status. While the Board of Approval for Special Economic Zone of the Union Government accorded SEZ status to 136 acres out of the 236 acres of land earmarked for the project, it directed the company to apply separately for SEZ status for the remaining 100 acres. Decision at meetingA meeting attended by Fisheries Minister S. Sarma, who is also the chairman of SmartCity Kochi, and Public Works Minister Mons Joseph last month had decided to do away with the PWD road going through the land assigned to SmartCity. M.M. Monayi, MLA, Sualiman Al-Riyam, Mithun Beeru, business development manager, SmartCity Kochi, Siddharth Bhattacharya, chief executive officer, Infopark, K. Kurian, senior technical advisor, Infopark, S. Mohankumar and C.K. Abdul Salaam, executive engineers (PWD roads) and P.P. Benny, additional executive engineer, also attended the meeting.
