Stalemate in NIRTAR ends

CUTTACK: Thanks to the intervention of the district administration and initiative taken by Cuttack city CPI(M) chief Subash Singh, the two-month long impasse at Olatpur-based National Institute of Rehabilitation Training and Research (NIRTAR) ended on Saturday night.

The national institute run by the Union Social Justice Ministry was in news since April this year due to confrontational attitude between authorities and students. Alleging ‘sexual escapade’ against its director B.M. Pradhan, the students had attacked him after ransacking his office on April 26. However, when no sign of any solution to the NIRTAR imbroglio was in sight, the city CPM chief Singh convened a mass convention on the issue.

Upon suggestions made by intellectuals from different quarters at the convention, a coordination committee was formed and Singh, as convener of the committee was entrusted to broker peace among the warring factions. Mr. Singh submitted a four-point formula to restore peace at the institute which was unanimously accepted by the students and teachers and all those who attended the meet.
