“World Stroke Day” at Apollo

NEW DELHI: To mark “World Stroke Day” on June 24, the Apollo Neuroscience Centre at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals organised an informative continuing medical education event on “Recent Advances in Stroke Management” at India Habitat Centre here on Sunday.

The hospital also offered a free check-up as part of its initiative to spread awareness and educate people about the risk of stroke. The CME saw various specialists highlighting the key concern areas in management and prevention of stroke. According to the hospital, “World Stroke Day” is being observed by WHO to recognise its growing incidence worldwide. Stroke is becoming a global problem and it is expected to assume epidemic proportions in the developing world, says WHO.

Stroke, also called a brain attack happens when the arteries leading to the brain are blocked or rupture. When the brain does not receive the needed oxygen supply, the brain cells begin to die. The symptoms of stroke are sudden onset of weakness in either half of the body, tingling numbness in one half of the body, speech difficulty, acute onset of headache with vomiting, giddiness, sudden loss of vision in one eye and sudden onset of gait abnormality.

In a statement, Senior Consultant Neurology (Stroke) at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals Dr. Pushpendra N. Renjen said: “If a brain attack victim is given emergency care within three to six hours of the first symptom, the disabling, long term effects of stroke can be thwarted or at least greatly reduced.”
