Russia offers a slew of courses

Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI: Besides medicine, students of Tamil Nadu are evincing interest to pursue engineering programmes in aerospace and avionics in recognised Russian Universities, going by the enquiries made by students during an awareness campaign here on Sunday organised by the Cultural Department attached to the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Chennai.

While Medicine is offered for a six-year duration in English medium, study of Russian language for a period of eight to ten months precedes the four-year engineering programmes in Aerospace, Avionics and Robotics. Indian students prefer Russian universities owing to the cost factor.

In certain universities such as Rostov, the cost of medical education does not exceed Rs. 1.5 lakh a year.

The awareness exercise is to ensure that students pursue medicine only in universities recognised by the Medical Council of India.

The nine recognised universities of international acclaim include Universities of Moscow, Tver, Rostov and Volgograd, according to C. Suresh Babu, Director, Study Abroad Educational Consultants, representing the Russian Cultural Centre.

About 80 students of Tamil Nadu guided through the Russian Cultural Centre joined Russian universities last year.

This year the Centre expects to admit 100 students, Mr. Suresh said, adding that the students are facilitated to obtain bank loans for their studies. Students are admitted to Russian universities based on admission norms of the MCI.
