Plea for more vents to drain floodwater

Special Correspondent

TIRUCHI: The Karumandapam Exnora Flood Prevention Committee has urged the Public Works Department to include a component, under the flood prevention scheme for the city, for constructing additional vents on the ‘keezh pokki’ (a drainage sluice) beyond Karumandapam.

In a representation, its president G. Subramanian and secretary C. Balasubramanian, pointed out that the two vents were too narrow and dilapidated to discharge the floodwaters from the Karumandapam region into the Uyyakondan river. A large number of residential colonies in the region were regularly affected as rainwater from various parts of the city flow here. It was essential that additional vents were constructed to ensure prompt draining of rainwater into the Uyyakondan river, they said and appealed to the government to include this component under the Rs.253-crore flood prevention scheme, for which the foundation stone is to be laid by Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi here on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Federation of Consumer and Service Organisations has welcomed the sanction of the flood prevention scheme and laying of foundation stone for the same. A resolution adopted at its core committee meeting here on Sunday, with M. Sekaran in the chair, appealed to the authorities to take steps to remove encroachments on Uyyakondan and Kudamuritti rivers. It also wanted the government to ensure that not more than 30,000 cusecs of water was released in to the Cauvery from Upper Anicut (Mukkombu) on any account, especially at times of flood.
