Nine colleges get nod from Medical Council of India; 1,150 seats likely

Deepa Kurup

BANGALORE: The Medical Council of India (MCI) has recommended nine medical colleges from the State — five government and four private colleges — for “renewal of permission”, giving them the green signal to admit students for the current academic year. About 660 government seats and 200 government quota seats will thus be opened up at subsidised fees.

The Raichur Institute of Medical Science, a government medical college set up in 2006, has not been recommended by the MCI.

The K.V.G. Medical College in Sullia has also been cleared for recognition according to the updated list of the MCI. Government medical colleges in Belgaum, Bidar, Hassan, Mandya and Shimoga have been granted permission to admit students for this academic year.

The S.S. Insitute of Medical Science and Research, Davangere; S.D.M. College, Dharwad; S. Ninjalingappa Medical College, Bagalkot; and Rajarajeshwari Medical College and hospital, Bangalore; have also been granted permission.

Putting together government and private colleges, they account for 1,150 medical seats.
