Corporation takes over part of stadium complex

Chennai: The Chennai Corporation took over a portion of the Jayalalitha Indoor Basketball Stadium Complex in Kilpauk on Monday.

Officials fenced off about 10 grounds, which was under the control of the Tamil Nadu Basketball Association (TNBA).

The Corporation said the land was “illegally occupied and encroached” upon by the Association.

But the TNBA said that it has a valid lease according to a State government order dated March 17, 1995.

The Corporation on Friday night pasted a notice on the complex stating that an unauthorised structure was built on the 10 grounds. “…No lease deed or document whatsoever was executed in favour of you by the Corporation of Chennai and the above said land was never handed over to your possession officially,” it said. The complex comprises 35 grounds, of which basketball courts cover about 25 grounds.

Lease agreement

The remaining 10 grounds, which are in conflict, house a hostel. The lease agreement for the 25 grounds was made in 1987 and another government order was issued in 1995 for the lease of 10 grounds. The TNBA pays a rent of Rs.2,400 per year for the complex.

The Corporation also proposes to take over the 25 grounds leased out earlier.
