Rural Business Hub for creating entrepreneurship ‘Rural youth should be more dynamic to survive in market’ DAVANGERE: B. Nijalingappa, Chief Executive Officer of Davangere Zilla Panchayat has said that there were plans to set up retail outlets for Self Help Groups (SHGs) at bus stands, railway stations and commercial complexes to help the SHGs to market their products. The zilla panchayat had started discussion with different authorities like KSRTC, railways and different civic bodies in the district to get a retail space reserved for the SHGs, he said. Inaugurating a workshop on Rural Business Hub (RBH) here on Monday, Mr. Nijalingappa said that there was an urgent need to encourage enterprising women in the district by providing them an avenue to market their products. He added that the zilla panchayat was also deliberating on buying products of SHGs for schools. Speaking about RBH, Mr. Nijalingappa said that it was meant to create entrepreneurs at a local level. The concept entails training the rural youth to manufacture quality goods using natural resources and market them. He added that many government schemes had failed as the beneficiaries had “misused” the grants. He noted that multinational companies had commenced their operations in all fields including vegetable retail. He exhorted the rural youth to be more dynamic and enterprising to survive in a competitive market. Y. Ramappa, president of the Davangere Zilla Panchayat, in his speech asked the banks to help the rural poor for self-employment. Speaking on the occasion, Kudremothi, assistant general manager, National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) said the contribution of agriculture to country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) had seen a decline. “In 1997 agriculture sector had contributed 7.5 per cent to the GDP, which came down to three per cent in 2007,” he said.
