Capturing great football moments

As the European Football Championship (Euro 2008) is hotting up in Switzerland, the Town Hall in Kozhikode is the venue for some remarkable frozen moments from football. On display is a selection of photos taken by press photographers over the years.

There are 80 pictures in the exhibition, being organised by Calicut Press Club, which opened on Monday.

The highlight of the exhibition is a collection of some vintage black-and-white pictures, including the one of former Indian striker N.M. Najeeb (now a coach) caught in a violent mood in a domestic tournament.

The photo of a few spectators climbing up the wall to get into the Corporation Stadium in Kozhikode when the ground was filled to the capacity is a reminder of the glory days football in the city had. There is another black-and-white picture of Auto Chandran, a football fan of Kozhikode, celebrating a goal in the stands.

There is also that poignant moment, when Cristiano de Lima Junior, the Brazilian who played for Dempo, collapsed on the ground, and then died, after scoring the winning goal for his team against Mohun Bagan in the final of the Federation Cup in Bangalore in 2004.

There are also pictures depicting the many joys that football gives to us.

Some exceptional photos from international football are also included in this exhibition along with paintings on football by Sudhakaran Edakandy. It concludes on Wednesday.
