Hike in wages sought

Special Correspondent

TIRUVANNAMALAI: Women beneficiaries under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) have urged the Central government to increase the daily wages payable under the scheme to enable the workers to cope with the increase in the prices of various essential commodities.

They represented their grievance to Collector M. Rajendran when he inspected the NREGS works in West Arni panchayat union on Saturday.

Mr. Rajendran assured them that he would recommend a wage hike to the government.

He told them that the government alone had to take a decision on the matter.

He advised them to cultivate vegetables such as brinjal, ladies finger, tomato, chilly, greens and drumstick in their houses to reduce their expenditure on vegetables and overcome the problem of increase in the prices of vegetables.
