CPI will not mediate to end standoff between Chief Minister, Ministers Not much headway in 79 cases of murder committed during last two years PUDUCHERRY: The two Communist parties on Monday flayed the Congress government in the Union Territory for its “acts of commission and omission.” In tune with the decisions taken at their State unit meetings, both the parties have decided to hold a joint campaign to highlight the issues affecting the people. Leaders of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Communist Party of India told reporters separately that the territorial government had “failed” to implement the election promises of the Congress and the announcements made in the Assembly. They also expressed serious concern over the “administration coming to a standstill” and “deterioration of law and order” in the Union Territory. They also demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the death of V. Jayaraman, an employee of the Pondicherry University, last month under suspicious circumstances, and other “irregularities” such as “tampering with mark sheets.” Addressing a press conference, secretary of the Puducherry unit of the CPI N. Kalainathan and national council member of the party R.Viswanathan said the Cabinet had “failed in its collective responsibility to offer good governance.” The CPI would not play the mediator’s role to end the standoff between the Chief Minister and his Cabinet colleagues, they said, adding that political intervention by the supporting parties to help the government overcome the present crisis had become impossible in the absence of a coordination committee in the Union Territory. However, the CPI had already submitted a memorandum to Congress president Sonia Gandhi seeking her intervention to bring about unity in the Cabinet to tone up the administration, they said. Mr. Kalainathan said the CPI would hold protest demonstrations before the Collectorate in Puducherry and Karaikal and the office of the Deputy Collector at Villianur on July 10 demanding house site pattas for the roofless people in the rural and urban areas. He also flayed the authorities for not distributing house site pattas to the Irulars at Vadhanur, owing to objections raised by the locals. He demanded withdrawal of the Coastal Zone Management notification with a view to protecting the livelihood of fishermen. Mr.Viswanathan accused the Pattali Makkal Katchi functionaries of “indulging in personal attacks” against him for criticising the performance of the Members of Parliament from the Union Territory. Puducherry CPI (M) secretary V. Perumal and State committee member of the party T. Murugan said the police had not made much headway in 79 cases of murder committed during the last two years. Most of these cases had not crossed beyond registering the first information report, they alleged. The infighting in the Congress was only a “ruse to divert the attention of the people from the burning problems,” they said, adding that the internal squabbles had reached unprecedented proportions disrupting peace and tranquillity in the Union Territory. The CPI (M) leaders also urged the government to take immediate steps to allay the apprehensions of the parents with regard to admissions to Standard XI as per the guidelines of the High Court.
