KOTTAYAM: Peerumade taluk experienced the third hartal this month on Monday. The hartal called by the CPI against trade union violence in the tea garden area was total and peaceful. It also disrupted the traffic on the Kollam-Theni national highway. The first of the hartals this month in Idukki district was called by the UDF on June 4, following the LDF-UDF conflict in Kattappana. This was followed by the State-wide hartal the next day, called by the LDF against price hike of petroleum products. On account of the hartal in Peerumade, goods carriers from Tamil Nadu were diverted via Cumbummett and Bodimett, while passengers who had to travel to Tamil Nadu via Kumily from Kottayam district had to end their journey at Mundakkayam.
