Maudany to stage protest

Staff Reporter

MALAPPURAM: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chairman Abdul Nasir Maudany will observe a day-long hunger strike in front of the Secretariat on July 1 in protest against the “continued neglect” of Malabar by the State and Central governments. The hunger strike will mark the launch of the party’s ‘Malabar memorial agitation’ against the denial of rights of people of northern Kerala.

PDP State general secretary Gafoor Puthuppadi said here on Monday that the neglect of Malabar was not confined to one or two fields. It was the case in all sectors, including health, education, industry, agriculture, road, rail, airport and seaport, and coastal development.

He said about 95,000 students who had completed SSLC this year did not stand a chance of securing admission to higher secondary courses in Malabar. Similarly, about 50,000 students who have cleared the higher secondary examination cannot pursue higher studies due to lack of seats in Malabar, he said.
