IIPM asked to go in for out-of-court settlement

Staff Reporter

UGC has declared the institute a fake university

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Monday suggested to the Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM) to go in for an out-of-court settlement with the University Grants Commission which had declared it a fake university.

Vacation Judge Rajiv Shakdhar passed the direction while hearing a petition by IIPM challenging the UGC decision to include it in the list of fake universities.

The Court asked the petitioner and the respondent to sit across the table and settle the dispute amicably. The Judge also asked the two to file a report in the Court this coming Friday about the progress of their talks.

The Court last week had rejected a plea by the private management institute to direct the UGC not to take any action against it till its petition was disposed of.

The UGC has put the list of “fake universities” on its website.

IIPM in its submission to the Court through its counsel A. S. Chandhioke said it was a fact that it did not have UGC recognition, but that did not mean it was a fake university. IIPM was recognised all over the world yet the UGC had included it in the list of fake universities, Mr. Chandhioke submitted, adding that IIPM just trained financial entrepreneurs and charged certain amounts as fees from them.

Urging the Court to direct the UGC to remove the name of IIPM from the list of fake universities, Mr. Chandhioke further submitted that his client was declared a fake university without being given an opportunity to submit its argument. However, the UGC rebutted the charge submitting that IIPM was given ample opportunities to submit its views on certain queries about the institution but it had failed to appear before it.
