Court notice to Union Home Ministry

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Monday issued notices to the Union Home Ministry and the Urban Development Ministry on a petition by an 83-year-old widow of a freedom fighter challenging her eviction from a government flat in Lodhi Colony here.

Issuing the notices, Vacation Judge Rajiv Shakdhar asked the two respondents to file replies to the petition by June 27.

In her petition, Gyanwati Dabar submitted that the government had allotted the flat to her freedom fighter husband in 1985 under a policy for allotment of accommodation to freedom fighters who were homeless.

The Estate Officer served a notice on her in 2002 asking her to vacate the flat after the death of her husband in 2001 yet she continued to live in it. The Estate Officer subsequently threw her out of the flat along with her belongings on June 2, forcing her to stay on the road as she had no other place to go, the petitioner alleged. She urged the Court to direct the government to arrange an alternative accommodation for her.
