THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Idukki on Monday received intermittent sharp showers, perhaps the most substantive ones of the season, as Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) kept watch for signs of the monsoon strengthening over the catchments of its major hydro-electric reservoirs located in the district. The flow into all the KSEB reservoirs was equivalent to only around 20 million units of electricity during the 24 hours ended Monday morning. Really good monsoon days last year had brought 8 times more water into these reservoirs. Widespread rain occurred in the State for the second day running on Monday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast an “increase in rainfall activity along the west coast after three days.”The speed and direction of the monsoon winds recorded by the IMD were still not ideal for an active monsoon phase over Kerala. During the 24 hours ended 8.30 a.m., Kanjirappally recorded heavy rainfall of 7 cm. Ottappalam recorded 6 cm rainfall; Mannarkkad 4 cm; Kannur, Kozhikode Airport and Koyilandy 3 cm each; Kozhikode, Kottayam, Perinthalmanna, Chittur, Thrissur and Vaikom 2 cm each and Kasaragod, Kollengode and Alappuzha 1 cm each.
