Thiruvananthapuram: The UDF joint parliamentary party meeting on Monday expressed regrets at Speaker K. Radhakrishnan’s failure to seek a consensus to resolve the deadlock in the State Assembly following the State government’s refusal to order an inquiry into the police action against agitating students and youth organisations or take punitive steps against erring police officials. In a statement here, the UDF said that going by precedent, the Speaker used to invite the party leaders when Opposition and ruling parties lock horn in the house. Even while the Speaker is duty bound to ensure that government business is carried out smoothly, he has equally duty bound to consider the sentiments of the opposition parties and seek out the possibilities of consensus. The Speaker’s reluctance to do so has created a wrong precedent, the meeting said. Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy presided over the meeting.
