NEW DELHI: The Delhi University Mathematics Teachers’ Association has submitted a memorandum to Union Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh urging him to intervene and ensure that the proposed new B.A./B.Sc. (Honours) Mathematics syllabus is not introduced till extensive discussions are held with the subject teachers. Challenging the motive of an “empowered committee” set up by Vice-Chancellor Deepak Pental to propose a new B.A./B.Sc. (Honours) Mathematics syllabus, some teachers have been claiming that the move had violated many University norms. ‘Immense damage’The Association has alleged that Prof. Pental had “bypassed” all statutes, ordinances and norms in order to “try and push through the new syllabus” despite “grave misgivings expressed by teachers of various colleges”. “We strongly feel that the proposed syllabus if implemented in its current form will cause immense damage to under-graduate Mathematics education and to the careers of future generation of students,” said Nandita Narain, spokesperson of the Association. “We have requested the Union Minister to intervene in this matter to ensure that the existing syllabus is continued for another year (2008-09), during which extensive discussions on the proposed syllabus can be held with college teachers through meetings, workshops and symposiums,” she added
