Nuclear deal

CPI (M) general secretary Prakash Karat’s statement that the government should fulfil people’s expectations and not its commitment to George Bush (June 23) could not have come at a more appropriate time. Withdrawal of support by the Left parties to the UPA government over the Indo-U.S. civilian nuclear deal can result in elections involving huge public expenditure. That is the last thing the common man, reeling under the grip of galloping inflation, wants. The wise thing to do is for all UPA members to sit together and discuss how best to avoid the election in the interest of the country.

V. Hari Haran,

Chennai

Soaring inflation and the stalemate on the Indo-U.S. nuclear deal have sealed the UPA government’s fate. The Left parties’ opposition to the deal and the withdrawal of support by BSP leader Mayawati have struck a dual blow to the government. The UPA should call an all-party meet and a special Parliament session to seek a consensus on the deal.

Sumitra Behera,

Dhenkanal

The country cannot do without nuclear energy if it wants to survive. While China has done hectic work to secure its energy needs, both petroleum and nuclear fuel, we have not succeeded because of our policies.

We have not signed the NPT because we feel it is discriminatory to the nuclear have-nots. But, ironically, we have overlooked that 189 countries, including the nuclear have-nots, have signed it. Instead of assuming the moral high ground, we should sign the NPT. Or, we should sign the 123 nuclear agreement with the U.S. The Prime Minister should take a bold decision to go for the deal, even risking an early election.

C.S. Venkitasubramanyan,

Coimbatore
