Corrections and Clarifications

  • The Guardian in its “Corrections and Clarifications” column (June 23, 2008) says “A story about the rate of suicides in Japan said, in error, that UN figures show that 24 in 10,000 people kill themselves in Japan. That should have been 24 in 100,000 people (‘Japanese government measures fail to cut suicide rate’, June 20, 2008).” The article was published in The Hindu as “Suicides rule high in Japan”, “Newscape” page, June 21, 2008.

  • The caption of a standalone PTI photograph “On top of the world” (June 21, 2008) was “The Summiteers: Seven members of the Sonam Gyatso Mountaineering Institute (SGMI) successfully climbed Mount Everest in a recent expedition organised after a gap of 43 years. They reached the peak from South Cole in Nepal. Three other members, including two women from Sikkim, also touched the peak.” It should have been “South Col”.

  • A sentence in the second paragraph of “Buying its way out of trouble” (Editorial, June 20, 2008) was “… As Abraham Lincoln noted a long time ago, you can please some of the people all the time, all of the people some of the time, but not all of the people all the time.” It should have been “You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time” — Abraham Lincoln (attributed), 16th President of United States (1861-1865).

  • The first paragraph in a report “A.P. rules out talks on Palar” (June 20, 2008) was “Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Thursday ruled out talks with the Tamil Nadu government on the construction of a reservoir across the Palar river in Chittoor district to store 2,000 tmcft of water.” The Correspondent clarifies that it should have been “2,000 mcft”.
