A rich haul for Indians

BANGKOK: Running without the injured Manjeet Kaur, the Indian women’s 4x400m relay team clocked a creditable 3:32.55 while winning the event in the opening leg of the Asian Grand Prix series at the Thammasat University Stadium here on Monday.

This was India’s best time in two years in a designated meet for Olympic qualifying purposes, though this timing in itself will not ensure it a place in the top 16 of the world in order to make the ‘cut’. It will need two better timings or at least one in the next two meets if it has to nurse hopes of making it to Beijing.

The bad news for the Indian team was Germany pushed itself into the top-16 list on Sunday with its sixth-place finish in the European Cup in Annecy, France, with a timing of 3:27.31 that pushed China down to the 17th and India 19th in current rankings.

Incidentally, China finished behind the Indian quartet of Satti Geetha, Mandeep Kaur, M. R. Poovamma and Chitra Soman in 3:35.76.

Seven gold medals

India had a rich haul of medals, seven gold, six silver and six bronze. Long jumper Anju George, battling winds, managed just two legal jumps, her first (6.40) and last (6.41) committing four fouls in between.
