BHUBANESWAR: M.C.Bhandare, the Orissa Governor, who is also a connoisseur of culture is moved by the diversity of dance traditions that he discovered after touring the State. He disclosed this while presenting the Nrutyayana Samman-2008 to internationally acclaimed dance scholar Dhirendra Nath Patnaik at the Rabindra Mandap here on Sunday. The samman has been instituted by the 15-year-old Nrutyayana dance institution by noted Odissi guru Durga Charan Ranbir. “Each of the 30 districts has at least a distinct dance form; be it tribal, folk or classical”, the Governor pointed out and revealed that he has taken a keen interest to compile details of such dance forms. Culture Minister Surta Narayan Patro, who was present on the occasion, announced that the State Government has decided to present Governor’s plaque along with a cash award of Rs.25,000 to each of the 12 artists and writers of the State every year commencing from this year. He further stated that the prestigious Konark Samman launched by the Government to honour an internationally-acclaimed artist or writer, would carry a cash award of Rs.1 lakh apart from the silver replica of the Sun temple of Konark. The award presentation ceremony was followed by premiere of Guru Ranbir’s new choreographic composition ‘Nirvana’, a dance drama based on the life of Buddha and Pallabi, a pure dance number by the students of Nrutyayana.
