IIMB welcomes new students

Staff Reporter

Well done: Captain G.R. Gopinath presenting the Director’s Merit List Award to a student at the IIMB in Bangalore on Monday.

Bangalore: The class of 2008-10, 273 wide-eyed students — 224 men and 49 women — filled the auditorium of the Indian Institute of Management (IIMB) as they were welcomed into the institute for the two-year post-graduate programme.

This incoming batch with 242 engineers was greeted by chief guest Captain G.R. Gopinath, Managing Director of Deccan Airlines, along with IIMB Director Pankaj Chandra, Dean of Administration Mahadevan; Dean of Academics Shyamal Roy and Dean of Admissions Subhashish Gupta.

Mr. Chandra welcomed the 30 students of the Fellowship Programme Management and briefed the students on the responsibilities they would be facing as part of their course.

He remarked that each one of them would have to be able to bridge the gaps that our nation as a whole is face with — the technological divide, the trade barriers in the age of globalisation, the immense disparity of wealth distribution and the environmental resources under constant pressure — so that they would move on successfully to other avenues from the institute considered the most prestigious in its league, he stressed on the fact that they needed to retain their integrity and stand up for their actions.

Capt. Gopinath recalled his journey as entrepreneur, mentioning every experience that led him towards being the managing director of Deccan Airlines, from his days as a farmer to the time he dealt with bureaucracy and finally his current position.

“Inspired by the German poet Goehte, who said Dare to dream and begin it, I have filled the space between dreaming and doing,” he added.

The top five per cent of the current batch (2007-2009), were awarded with the Director’s Merit List Award.
