Permanent account number card is an important tool nowadays for all kind of financial dealings. A PAN card neither contains the permanent residential address nor the office address of the card holder. If it is incorporated, the card can be used as a proof for all kind of official needs. I request the authorities to look into the matter. R. S. Surya Prakash, Kottapattu. Spare second cylinder tooState Government has come forward to reduce the price of domestic gas cylinder by Rs.30, but the reduction will not apply to families having more than one cylinder. Almost all double-cylinder holders keep the second cylinder only to be used when the other cylinder becomes empty. Hardly anyone is likely to use both the cylinders simultaneously. Hence, the reduction in price so graciously announced could very well be extended to cover the second cylinder also. P. K. Balasubramanian, North Andar Street. Cut fuel pricesAt present more than 90 per cent of the people are having more than one cylinder. The Chief Minister should emulate the Delhi government and reduce the price of all the petroleum products. H. Ghouse Baig, Crawford. Reduce motor fuel dependencyIt is very important to enforce economy in oil consumption through all conceivable ways. Corporate sector should discourage their executives from using office cars which normally have a lone occupant. Instead, the companies can introduce air-conditioned buses for picking up and dropping their officers. State-owned transport corporations should also introduce similar facilities. Cost of petrol for cars should be made highly prohibitive so that consumption can be minimised. The government should also restrict production and sale of new cars till normalcy is restored. Dalmiapuram Gannesan, Srirangam. Extend train to NagoreA metre gauge train was running from Kollam to Nagore via Madurai serving the people of Karaikal, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur and Kollam, Thiruvananthapuram and Kanyakumari districts till 1995. It was cancelled due to gauge conversion which is over upto Nagore. Now train 727/728 are running between Kollam and Madurai. Hence, I request the authorities to extend the train upto Nagore which will be of great help to senior citizens and pilgrims to Velankanni, Nagore and Thirunallar. S. George, Karaikal. Pay CommissionThe Sixth Pay Commission submitted the report in a timeframe of one-and-a-half years after collecting all information with a skeletal staff. It is already three months since the Centre has received it and decisions are yet to be taken, causing anxiety to its servants and pensioners. It is hoped that the government will immediately announce its decisions. Shantha, Tiruvanaikoil. No space for saplingsThe road in Moolaithoppu, dug for laying drainage pipes, has not been repaired or relaid even after two years. This causes a lot of inconvenience to pedestrians and vehicle owners. My letters to the Corporation have evoked no response. Cement roads are being laid on Uthara and Chittirai Veedhis. Many trees have been cut. I suggest a provision be made by leaving one metre by one metre pits for sapling plantation. . S. Sivaraman, Srirangam. Small bridge taking a lot of timeAt a time when massive road widening and overbridge works are going on all over, it is a pity to see the 10-metre-wide Chettipalam bridge (across Uyyakondan river near MGR statue in Cantonment) taking years for completion. There are no bottlenecks like traffic diversion or land acquisition. It is now said that the new bridge will be ready within a month. It should have been completed 10 years earlier. J.P.R. Tucker, Anna Nagar. Plant saplingsIn the name of beautification, trees in front of Tiruchi Railway Junction were removed. While passing the location, one can feel the heat. The Railways are requested to plant saplings in the area to restore the cool atmosphere that prevailed. Electrical coconut tree may look good but, it will generate heat. The status quo of the bus shelter and taxi stand before demolition should have been maintained. Even now, it is not too late. The auto stand may also be shifted near RMS. The auto and taxi stands are a stumbling block. Total confusion prevails in the area during 5.30 a.m. to 6.30 a.m. and 9.00 p.m. to 10.00 p.m. Action is required to be taken to save the passengers struggling with luggage. M. Gopalakrishnan, Thillai Nagar. Narrow entranceIn Thiruvanai Koil, the very first entrance of Rajagopuram is narrow for the public. Vehicles are also using this way, causing inconvenience. It is suggested that the Rajagopuram be demolished and reconstructed with a wider entrance. The Tamil Nadu government and the Devasthanam board may do the needful for the welfare of the public. S. Rajagopal, O.F.T. Estate. Clear approach roads firstMark Twain, the renowned satirist, when asked how to stop smoking said, “It is very easy to give up smoking because I have done it so many times”. Ask the authorities in Tiruchi how to restore bus traffic in East Boulevard Road, and they would say, “It is very easy, we have restored it so many times from 1965” (Waiting for buses, The Hindu dated 19-06-08). Unless, the approach road at Fish Market is rid of encroachments, it is impossible to maintain two-way traffic in this stretch with 3 turnings to reach E.B. Road. The other alternative is to make it one way near Fish Market and the return traffic through Taranallur to join the E.B. Road. As such, the E.B. road is not the bottleneck but the approach roads. A.V. Narayanan, Thillainagar. Underpass woesThe railway bridge near Melapudur has no parapet wall or iron rails and water and urine fall on on passersby below when a train passes. The day is not far off when a goods wagon or a crowded compartment falls on top of a city bus passing through the underpass. I request the TMC, the Railways and the PWD ministry to do the needful. P. David, Teppakulam.
