Build subways

High and long foot over-bridges built across the several platforms at Madurai railway junction cause immense discomfort to weary travellers. The authorities must remove these structures and construct subways instead.

Halt by trains

I am shocked to note that a passenger slipped from the moving train and lost his legs at Madurai railway junction, one of the biggest in the Southern Railway, with a high density of traffic. All trains passing through this major station are making only whistle stops, without giving enough time for people to alight and board with their luggage. How is it possible to get down or get in with baggage, children and old people within five minutes? The railway authorities should allow at least 15-minute halt at major stations. Another thing is the callous attitude of people during times of emergency. They should have given a helping hand to help the victim avail quick medical aid. They are afraid of being termed as witnesses to the incident if an enquiry is ordered on a later date.

Educational system

It is disheartening to learn that every student wants to do computer science, irrespective of his/her aptitude. The present education system is quantitative and not qualitative in our schools. At the SSLC level, 100 per cent pass is targeted; at the HSC level, it is 95 to 100 per cent. It is obvious that all are eligible to pursue higher education. The irony is whether with 50 per cent or 90 marks, all want to join computer Science/IT courses. As a placement Officer, I would like to share some first-hand information with parents and students on what the IT industry really expects from candidates. The candidate should have consistent academic performance right from SSLC — 60 per cent and above. They do not test the knowledge of the subject but the aptitude — analytical, logical and numerical abilities. During Group Discussion, one’s general knowledge/common sense is assessed besides how he/she will interact in a team. Above all, his communication skill, especially in English, is assessed. Hence, I would appeal to the parents and students to start homework right from the school days on these lines.

Helmet rule

Recent road accidents, involving two-wheelers, in Madurai reveal that the riders were not wearing helmet. It is very alarming since the traffic has become heavy in the city and safety measures ought to be strictly followed by riders. The State Government called for compulsory wearing of helmets by two-wheeler riders but the pity is the rule has not been enforced strictly by the traffic police. The time has come to take strict action against those riders not wearing helmet.

Not serene now

The road leading to Gandhi Museum from Tamukkam Grounds signal is serene since it is covered by shade from trees all the way. It is cool even during the hottest hours of the day. It is used by children going to Rajaji Park and tourists visiting Gandhi Museum. This stretch has, of late, become a parking lot for mini buses when the drivers want to take rest, thus intruding the pedestrians’ space. Further, the mini buses (permitted to ply only up to Tamukkam) take unauthorised trips up to the Collectorate. It is a pity that the traffic police personnel posted opposite Rajaji Park do not take notice of what is happening right in front of their eyes.
