BANGALORE: A city police sub-inspector allegedly beat up his wife, father-in-law and brother-in-law and later threatened to shoot them at their home at Jaraganahalli in J.P. Nagar police station limits on Sunday night. Anil Kumar, a sub-inspector at Channammakere Achchukattu police station, turned up at his father-in-law L. Nagalingaiah’s house in Jaraganahalli to take back his wife, Roopa, who was staying there for a week. He left in a huff over her reluctance to accompany him, only to return after a while. He slapped Roopa, turned on Mr. Nagalingaiah who came to her rescue, bit his brother-in-law Manjesh and later shot two rounds from his service revolver before running away, police said. A shaken Roopa said she was being harassed by Kumar since their marriage three years ago. “He has been harassing me for various reasons. He asked me to kill my son who was born premature a year ago. He was possessive about me and did not like others meeting me,” she said. The couple quarrelled and she came to her parents’ house five days ago. Roopa said: “He came yesterday to take me back with him. My father wanted to send me only after talking to him. He came in a car and had a discussion with me and my father. He then stormed out saying that he would come for me on Tuesday.” A few minutes later he came back to ask for the car key and allegedly started beating Roopa. “My father was beaten up. He bit my brother who came to the rescue of my father,” she said. Roopa’s brother Manjesh said Kumar had brought seven armed accomplices along with him who damaged furniture and beat up the uncle-in-law, Narayan. “He has been pestering my sister to bring money for buying a site in J.P. Nagar,” Manjesh said and added, “He threatened to kill us. He also bit me on the right hand.” EccentricDeputy Commissioner of Police (South) S. Ravi said Kumar has been driven to “wrong ends” because of his “eccentric” nature. “He beat a constable and had a clash with some people,” he said. Kumar joined the service in 2005 and has been working in Channammakere Achchukattu police station for the last five months. Mr. Ravi said the police have taken up a case of dowry harassment and are searching for Kumar. A departmental inquiry will also be conducted, he added.
