With reference to the article “Weighed down by book load” (Focus dt.17/06/08), the fact that schoolchildren are carrying book-loads beyond their capability has long been established. The only thing that parents can do to reduce the burden is to arrange for transport to carry the load or carry the books themselves that many of them seem to be doing year after year. School authorities seem to be overlooking the problem for unknown reasons. It makes one wonder whether the notebook manufacturers are tempting the schools with incentives to prescribe more books. It is time the Government stepped in and took steps to rescue future generations from this burden. D. Lakshmi Devi Visakhapatnam Pertinent questionThis Focus report raises pertinent question in regard to the burden heaped on children in the name of knowledge acquisition. It brings to the fore the fact that we, parents and society, are putting so much pressure on our children to perform that we have become blind to the fact that our children are living in the same conditions that the child worker is put in. In both instances the child’s inborn talents are not given an opportunity to flower. It is unfortunate that we apply dual standards when it comes to making and implementing policies. Y. Narasimha Rao Visakhapatnam.
