‘Free power scheme will remain as long as Congress is in power’ Taunts TDP for failure to implement projects during nine years in power SRIKALAHASTI: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has announced that a total of three lakh acres of land will be under irrigation in Chittoor district at the end of three years. Three projectsAddressing farmers at the ‘Rythu Chaitanya Yatra’ here on Monday, Dr. Reddy said that the three irrigation projects viz., Galeru-Nagari, Handri-Neeva and Somasila-Swarnamukhi link canal, will be realised within a period of three years. The Chennai-bound Telugu Ganga, which flows through this region wetting irrigation lands in and around Srikalahasti, will be ready for completion by the year-end, he noted. He indicated the government’s “firm resolve” to get the projects completed within the stipulated period of time. Listing achievementsDr. Reddy said that the government was bent on rescuing the farm sector from the present state of crisis, “in spite of the financial burden involved”. He reminded that the UPA government’s loan waiver scheme had turned out to be a boon for 83 lakh farmers in the State, directly benefiting 2.05 lakh ryots in Chittoor district to the extent of Rs. 723 crore. He announced that the free power scheme would be in vogue as long as Congress remained in power. He also dwelt on achievements in animal husbandry, minimum support price, housing, healthcare and other fronts. Hitting outHitting out at the TDP chief N. Chandrababu Naidu, Dr. Reddy tauntingly remarked that the “son of the soil” did not care to realise pending projects despite staying in power for nine long years. In the same vein, the local MLA S.C.V. Naidu lashed out at the ex-MLA and the former Minister for Minor Irrigation B. Gopalakrishna Reddy for doing nothing for the irrigation needs of his constituency, leave alone the State. Poor arrangementsPoor arrangements at the venue became conspicuous when the public jumped the barricades in a hurry and tried to rush towards the high security ‘D’ zone. Further, the tying of banners all along the barricades prevented women from having a clear view of the dais. This annoyed them and made them turn impatient. Deputy Speaker G. Kuthuhalamma, Chief Whip N. Kirankumar Reddy, Member of Parliament Chinta Mohan, Minister for Technical Education R. Chenga Reddy and Zilla Parishad Chairman M. Subramanyam Reddy were among those who participated in the programme.
