Jayalalithaa threatens agitation
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa on Monday threatened to launch an agitation if Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi failed to issue an order based on his statement that local bodies were free to take a decision on increasing property tax depending on the requirement.
In a statement here, she said the local bodies were not in a position to take any decision on property tax because of the Chief Minister’s “empty words.”
“There is confusion among the people about the property tax hike. The local bodies can decide against a hike only if the Chief Minister’s announcement is made into an order,” she said.
Stating that her government did not increase the property tax in 2003 despite implementation of a slew of project including solid waste management, underground sewerage schemes, stormwater drainage schemes and creation of parks and playgrounds, Ms. Jayalalithaa said Mr. Karunanidhi should stop making “irresponsible announcements.”
