TIRUCHI: Temporary employees appointed by the Government under the Tamil Nadu Education Department Medical Aid Scheme three decades ago have appealed for regularisation of their services. Under the scheme, employees at the levels of drivers, attenders and record clerks and doctors have been conducting medical camps in schools in lieu of honorarium. However, they now find the remuneration, varying between Rs. 1,500 and Rs. 2,500 a month, disproportionate to the work they execute. There have been several instances of these employees retiring without any gratuity, provident fund or pensionary benefits despite the fact that their service records are maintained and they sign the attendance register every day just as regular employees. There are only 25 such employees remaining with the Education Department now. In a representation to the Chief Minister, the association has pointed out that regularisation of their services does not entail additional expenditure to the government since there is a bank deposit of Rs. 1 crore under the scheme and the amount collected from the students availing themselves of the benefit of the medical camp could be raised reasonably from the present level of just one rupee per annum.
