LUCKNOW: Former Uttar Pradesh unit chief of the banned Student Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), Humam Ahmed alias Humayun was arrested by the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) and Gorakhpur police in Gorakhpur on Sunday. He was the SIMI chief in 2001 and was on the run since then. Additional Director-General of Police, Law and Order, Brij Lal, told newspersons here on Monday that a case relating to anti-national activity (case number 609/01) under Sections 124 (A), 153 (A), 153 (B)/ 298, 505 and 120 (B) of the Indian Penal Code was filed against Humam in 2001. A chargesheet was filed against him by the police on July 29, 2002 after the attachment of his property, Mr. Lal said. The Uttar Pradesh police official said the SIMI activist was arrested in connection with the 2001 case. He is being interrogated, Mr. Lal added. Humam is a resident of Hanif Nagar locality in Sultanpur town in Uttar Pradesh and had been absconding since 2001 when the organisation was banned. A crackdown had been enforced on SIMI members by the then Bharatiya Janata Party Government of Rajnath Singh. Mr. Lal said no recovery was made from Humam by the police and ATS team. In a separate drive launched against criminals and history sheeters in the State, the police rounded up 1,245 wanted accused and 1,317 others against whom non-bailable warrants were issued by the courts. The drive was launched in the intervening night of June 22 and 23, 2008 all over the State. Police teams had been constituted for the purpose.
