(From left) K.G. Balakrishnan, Chief Justice of India; Durai Murugan, Law Minister; A.K. Ganguly, Chief Justice of the Madras High Court; and A.R. Lakshmanan, Chairman of the Law Commission, at the Lok Adalat. — MADURAI: The audience at the inauguration of a continuous Lok Adalat was surprised to see Law Minister Durai Murugan, Madras High Court Chief Justice Asok Kumar Ganguly and Law Commission of India Chairman Justice A.R. Lakshmanan presiding over the People’s Court in the Madras High Court Bench here on Monday. Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan inaugurated the event. Interestingly, the first case placed before the Adalat was one relating to the construction of residential quarters for High Court staff here. The government had allotted 3.67 acres near the Mattuthavani bus terminus in June 2007. There was no progress thereafter. K. Govindarajan, a practicing advocate, filed a public interest litigation petition. Replying to it, the Tamil Nadu Housing Board cited lack of funds for starting the construction. Acting ingenuously, Mr. Justice P.D. Dinakaran placed the PIL petition before the Lok Adalat panel and obtained favourable orders.
