ISLAMABAD: An Indian fisherman imprisoned in a Karachi jail died on Monday, Indian officials here confirmed. Television channels reported that Bhagwan Das, the fisherman, was electrocuted when he switched on a washing machine in the jail laundry where he had gone to wash his clothes. The fisherman was being held in Landhi jail in Karachi, where 402 other Indian fishermen are jailed. Bhagwan Das was taken into custody along with several other Indian fishermen on April 24 by Pakistan’s Maritime Security Agency for drifting into Pakistani territorial waters. An eight-member India-Pakistan committee of judges that visited jails in Pakistan recently recommended the immediate release of Indian fishermen in Landhi jail if their national identity was confirmed.
