Drinking water being released to municipalities and panchayats

Special Correspondent

VIJAYAWADA: Irrigation authorities are releasing water to the Krishna Eastern Delta despite a two-foot drop in the level at Prakasam Barrage here. It is mandatory to maintain a level of 12 feet in the barrage to ensure that water flows by gravity into the cooling canal to the Vijayawada Thermal Power Station (VTPS).

The authorities released 1,945 cusecs into the Krishna Eastern Main Canal despite the level at the barrage touching the 10-foot mark on Tuesday.

Deputy Superintending Engineer G. Bhaskara Rao said it was taking time for the water released at Nagarjunasagar Project to reach the barrage. Meanwhile, water was being released for filling the drinking water tanks of Eluru, Gudivada, Machilipatnam, Pedana municipalities and hundreds of panchayat water tanks in the Delta.

“Most of the villages have two tanks and water is being released again for filling them after a gap of over 50 days,” he said.

Meanwhile, there is a marginal improvement in the position of water in the irrigation projects on Krishna River.

The water available for irrigation in Almatti increased from the two tmc ft on the same day last week to 13 tmc ft. Similarly, the water available in Tungabhadra reservoir increased from 13 tmc ft last week to 21 tmc ft and in Nagarjunasagar the water available increased from 77 tmc ft to 82 tmc ft.

The authorities are releasing 10,643 cusecs from Srisailam reservoir, even though the water there was below dead storage level for power generation.

Out of the 9,074 cusecs being received at Nagarjunasagar, the authorities were releasing 3,434 cusecs to Prakasam barrage.
