Kozhikode: The Akhila Kerala Dheevara Sabha has demanded for fishermen community the benefits that have been made available to members of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. The demand is being raised to coincide with the Dheevara Day celebrations organised here on Thursday. ‘Recommended’K.K. Radhakrishnan, president, Dheevara Sabha, and V. Dinakaran, general secretary, demanded here on Tuesday that fishermen community should get these benefits as recommended by the Ranganath Mishra Commission. In 1993, the Mandal Commission had also recommended such benefits. The Dheevara Sabha leaders were disappointed that the State government had spent only Rs.271 crore out of the Rs.1,441.75 crore that had been made available for tsunami relief work. To get reimbursement of the money sanctioned for tsunami relief work, the State government would have to spend before September 30 Rs.245.46 crore sanctioned by the Asian Development Bank and Rs.1,196.29 crore sanctioned by the Planning Commission before March 31 next year. . The fishermen’s organisation urged the government to ensure that the funds available for tsunami relief work were fully utilised in the fisheries sector. The Dheevara Day celebrations would be inaugurated by M.P. Veerendrakumar, MP. Indian Union Muslim League State general secretary P.K. Kunhalikutty, Nationalist Congress Party State president K. Muraleedharan and BJP State general secretary M.T. Remesh would speak at the programme to be held at the Parish Hall, near the English Church.
