Artefact seized

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Officials of the Docks Intelligence Unit of Customs at the Chennai port on Monday seized an antique wooden elephant , which was meant for export from a container freight station.

C. Rajan, Commissioner of Customs, Sea Port, said the artefact was booked by Nicolas Fournier of France, who declared it as a personal effect.

It was destined to Marseille. When Customs officials examined it, the artefact weighed 148 kg.

As it was found very old, the artefact was referred to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) for examination, he said.

The Expert Advisory Commission of the ASI certified that it was an antique material.
