Early release of water

Staff Correspondent

BELLARY: Perhaps for the first time in the recent past, water from the Tungabhadra Dam is being let into the canals at least 10 days early for irrigation. Usually, water is released during the second fortnight of July. But this season, due to availability of water in the dam and in anticipation of good monsoon, a decision has been taken to release water early.

On Tuesday, the water level in the dam in Hospet stood at 1,603.69 feet against the full reservoir level of 1,633 feet. Around 25.049 tmcft of water is augmented in the dam.

The 87th meeting of the Irrigation Consultative Committee of the Tungabhadra Project held recently at Munirabad in Koppal district decided to release water from July 1 into the high-level canal on the right bank of the reservoir and from July 5 into the main canal and the high-level canal on the left bank and into the low-level canal on the right bank depending on the availability of the water, whichever is earlier.

The following is the canal-wise allocation and release of water as per the schedule chalked out by the committee.

Around 1,100 cusecs of water will be released into the high-level canal on the right bank from July 1 to November 5.

For the low-level canal on the right bank, around 600 cusecs of water will be released from July 5 to November 20.

As much as 3,100 cusecs of water will be released into the left bank main canal from July 5 to November 30 and around nine cusecs of water will be released into the high-level canal on the left bank during the same period.

Around 200 cusecs of water has been released into the ancient Raya and Basavanna canals.

Farmers in the command area have been requested to make judicious use of water released as per schedule, according to a press released here by the office of Superintending Engineer, Tungabhadra Project Circle, Munirabad.
