Stress on reducing number of dropouts

Chitradurga: Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Vishweshwar Hedge Kageri has asserted that the Government will lay stress on reducing the number of school dropouts in the State.

Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, he said that for various reasons, the number of school dropouts in classes 5, 7 and 10 was increasing.

The Minister said that an awareness campaign would be launched across the State to increase the intake of students and reduce the number of dropouts.

He said that over 70,000 students have discontinued their studies at various stages of schooling for various reasons, including poverty. The Minister, however, could not give the exact number of school dropouts and number of schools being run by the Government. On the school “adoption” policy, Mr. Kageri said that to improve the quality of education by providing infrastructure, the Government would invite non-government organisations and religious institutions to adopt schools.

Asked if the decision would not allow the privatisation of government schools which could deprive poor students of free primary education, the Minister said that the administration of such schools would remain under the Government while private agencies would only help in providing infrastructure.
