This Day That Age
R. Krishnan, India’s No. 1, won his opening match on the No. 1 court on June 23 when the 1958 All-England Lawn Tennis championships opened at Wimbledon. He beat J.M. Cranston of America by three sets to one 6-3, 6-4,1-6, 6-3. S. Akhtar Ali earned the distinction of being the first to enter the second round at the cost of A.J. Clayton of Great Britain in straight sets 6-1, 8-6, 6-4. Narendra Nath lost in straight sets to W.J. Jacques of Australia. While Premjit Lall and Udayakumar lost their matches to Anderson and Saiko, Naresh Kumar beat the Brazilian, I. Ribeiro in straight sets. First-seeded A.J. Cooper was extended by G.D. Owen (Great Britain). The Australian champion, who inaugurated the championships on the Centre court, won 10-8, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.
