MUMBAI: The stock markets remained weak on Tuesday with the Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex losing more than 180 points at close on Tuesday, testing the crucial below 14000 level for the first time since August last year on hectic selling pressure, influenced by concerns over inflation. The 50-share Nifty of the National Stock Exchange also lost nearly two per cent to end the day below the key 4200 level at 4191.10. The 30-share Sensex, settled at 14106.58, a fall of 186.74 points. The barometer, which had lost a total of 1590.32 points in the past five straight sessions, oscillated in a range of 14432.90 and 13991.31, reflecting high volatility in trade. While at the day’s high it was up by nearly 140 points, the index was down by nearly 302 points at its low. Metal stocks continued to be a heavy loser with its index closing the day lower by 3.52 per cent, the highest for any index. Technology, IT, FMCG and PSU stocks also bore the brunt of selling and were down by over two per cent. Scrip-wise, Hindustan Unilever, which closed lower by 5.32 per cent, was the worst hit among Sensex group. Tata Steel, L&T and ONGC were the other major heavyweight stocks which came under hectic selling pressure. — PTI
