Four varsity athletes suspended

NEW DELHI: The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has suspended four university athletes for two years each for doping violations reported at the all-India inter-university athletics championships at Tiruchi last January.

The athletes are: Sachin Panwar (Chaudhry Charan Singh University, Meerut; javelin winner, steroid stanozolol and stimulant mephentermine); M. Vijayakumar (Madras University, 100m winner, stanozolol); Amit Kumar Panwar (Chaudhry Charan Singh University; hammer throw winner, steroid epimetandiole); Hardeep Kaur (Panjab University, Chandigarh; shot put winner; stanozolol).

Hearing of another athlete charged with a violation, Shailendra Singh (Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar University, Lucknow, shot put silver) is pending.

The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has already been informed of the doping violations and resultant sanctions in the latest batch of cases.

It may be recalled that the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) was suspended by the AFI last February for failing to recognise the sanctions imposed by the federation during the Tiruchi meet.

The AIU had dragged its feet over violations committed at the 2007 championships also. One of the cases, that of Bharatha Reddy, is still pending.

The AIU, it is learnt, has so far not responded to the AFI’s notices regarding the matter of its suspension. — Special Correspondent
