MADURAI: The Southern Railway Women’s Welfare Organisation organised an awareness meeting on ‘Global warming - earth under threat’ here on Tuesday. Speaking on the occasion, SRWWO president Seema Kumar said that every individual had the responsibility of protecting the environment. With some changes in the habits and lifestyle of people, natural resources could be saved. She outlined the need for saving energy and growing more trees. Divisional Railway Manager Hemant Kumar said that efficient use of electricity and use of alternative energy such as bio-fuel would go a long way in protecting the environment. The forests were dwindling and only mass movements could stop further damage, he said. Centre for Environmental Services founder S. V. Pathy said that it was high time the message to keep environment clean and green reached the masses, as global warming posed serious threats. Additional Divisional Railway Manager D. K. Nayak also spoke. Three students from the Railway Mixed Higher Secondary School presented their views on global warming. Malliga Arjunan welcomed the gathering. Joint secretary Kanmani Elampoornam presented the annual report of the association and secretary Selvi Sornappan proposed a vote of thanks.
