Landowners protest survey

Staff Reporter

Police protection provided to officials

Compound walls demolished

KOCHI: The Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) carried out works on the rail connectivity for the proposed Vallarpadam International Container Transhipment Terminal in Vaduthala amidst protest by a section of landowners on Tuesday.

Police protection was provided to the work as requested by the RVNL authorities. Four landowners, whose vacant land had already been acquired after issuing warrants last month, staged the protest. Since they declined to accept compensation, the price for their land fixed under the Land Acquisition Act was deposited with the court, Revenue Department officials said.

These landowners protested when the RVNL officials came to their land as part of the ongoing construction works. A surveyor who was sent to the spot proved their arguments wrong, according to the officials. Following this, the compound walls of the land were demolished and land filling was carried out.

However, Justine Thomas, one of the four landowners who protested the works and is also the general convener of the Vaduthala Janakeeya Samithi, contested the claims of the revenue department.

Committee protest

Meanwhile, the coordination committee that is opposing land acquisition in Vaduthala has protested against Tuesday’s attempt to take over land.

The committee said the landowners were allotted time till July 15 to keep possession of the land.
