HYDERABAD: The Andhra Jyothi daily editor K. Srinivas was seen standing beside the protesters, while the latter beat up the effigy symbolising Madiga Reservation Porata Samiti (MRPS) leader Manda Krishna with chappals and hence a case was made against him, the police claimed on Tuesday. Speaking to reporters after arresting the editor, the Banjara Hills ACP V. Ramakrishnaiah maintained that they had found evidence against the arrested editor in the form of a photo published by a newspaper. Mr. Srinivas was standing beside one of his employees, Vamshi Krishna, who was beating the effigy with chappals, the ACP explained. When the editor did not take part in insulting the effigy how can he be arrested? “But standing beside the protesters amounts to conspiring and supporting the act. Anyway the accused can defend themselves in court,” the ACP replied. High dramaHigh drama was witnessed before and after the arrest of the Telugu daily’s editor and two reporters. Initially, police rang up the two reporters, Vamshi Krishna and T. Srinivas, asking them to come to Jubilee Hills police station on some work. When they turned up, the police told them that they were being taken into custody in connection with the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act case registered following a complaint by MRPS. Stiff resistanceOn learning this, several staffers of the daily rushed there protesting the arrest of their colleagues. Bowing to the pressure, the police took the two reporters to the daily office only to witness even more stiff resistance to the arrest.Heated arguments went on for over an hour between the ACP and the daily’s managing director V. Radhakrishna, who insisted on knowing what evidence the police had against the editor. Telugu Desam MLA P. Keshavulu from Anantapur district, A.P. Press Academy Chairman D. Amar and Indian Journalists Union Secretary General K. Srinivas Reddy, who came to the daily’s office, too vehemently protested the arrests. Raising slogans against the Government and the MRPS, the daily’s staffers tried to prevent the arrest but the police drove the editor to the police station pacifying them. A large number of journalists gathered at the police station and tension prevailed there when reports last came in.
